Hi There,

Im new to this forum.
Ive been qualified 6 years and need some advice please.
I currentley work in a high security mens prison, im a band 6 there.
I have had a lot of probem with senior staff being unkind, loading work on to me, not supporting me etc.
I am the only band 6, and have been for a year.
I started at the prison August 2008, as a band 5, within 2 months i was promoted to band 6.
I had no induction, no support, no supernumery period etc.
I often had to do the work of 5 or 6 nurses as we were so short staffed, i had to extend a lot of my shifts to long days to accomadate the department. I never have a lunch-break.
I nearly killed myself trying to keep the department afloat, i did a good job. No-one else would take on so many tasks, my band 5's literally refused.
last January I broke my arm, and my dog had a stroke.
I didnt take a day off sick, i kept working with my arm in a cast.
I had no A/Leave left aaaaand asked if i could take 5 days unpaid leave to go away.
I was granted the days off.
On my return, i overheard 2 of the band 7's, on 2 seperate occasions, saying i was 'never there'.
The band 7 who gave me the band 6 even stated that she wasnt sure if she should have given me the job, she said this to me in front of my junior staff.
I felt i ahd to prove myself constanly.
My hours were scrutinised constantly/
No-one seemed to see how hard i was working. In September 2009 i moved house, i took a week of to do so. On my return to work my band 7's had a go at me and said i need to get on top of things. I was so angry that they could only see the things i hadnt been able to do.
i was signed off sick and am due to go back very soon.
Im looking for a new job and have an interview next friday.
Im really worried that they wont give me the job due to my sickness.
I know i need to tell them, but what can i say that will not ruin my chances?
Ive been off sick for almost 8 weeks, with stress.
Any ideas?

Hi Cat,

It sounds like you have had a terrible time of it!

How did the interview go - what did you decide to do about sharing your recent negative experience's?

The best thing to try and do is show that you can be objective about your experience and identify what you did well and what you could have done better and how you would have expected to be better supported.

It is something that you would want to rehearse a few times so maybe set yourself up with a computer and work out the sort of questions you might get asked. Then play them back and record yourself answering the questions. This is a good technique for general interviews but in your case would allow you to experience the emotional catharsis which would be a likely side-effect of exploring and discussing your recent experiences.
