It seems quite surreal in my work area at the moment. People seem to be in a kind of a 'daze' - perhaps shocked by the ConDem proposals for our NHS and the risks posed to their own jobs, terms and conditons and pensions. At the same time, many appear to be resigned to whatever fate befalls them. Many of my clinical colleagues are saying to me 'why bother, nothing will change.' Indeed, I wondered the same thing myself and whether it is worth expending the amount of energy that making a stand usually involves. It would be nice just to get on with the clinical work without having to worry about these matters. I only needed to contemplate for a short time, because the consequeces of doing something outweigh the consequences of doing nothing - and there is a little matter of conscience - even if the fight is futile in the end. I have had great difficultry engaging union reps in my area who are slow to return my emails and calls. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they must all be on holiday - at the same time!

So, I have been left to contemplate what action to take. I have contacted my MP. I do intend to respond to the official consultations before 11th October. I have also used the media in a limited way to date. Recognising that I am 'one cog' in a very large wheel, I will go on doing my bit. However, I would also like to see some collective action - between nurses and in conjunction with others in the public sector. Although I felt very little was happening, I am heartened by the fact that some people are beginning to organise a response. Planned rallies in Liverpool and London represent a good start. I am hoping to see some leadership emerging from unions and the Labour Party nationally to harness the energies of all those who want to know how best to channel them. This is not to take away from what individuals can do. With this in mind, I have set up a website http://www.nhssos.netfor those individuals who needs some suggestions of what we can do. If anyone has any suggestions to add to the site, these would be most welcome.
