Hi all,
Just hoping for a bit of advice.. I'm planning to leave my job to go travelling for 4-6 months in October. I have been in my job for 1 year and only need to give 6 weeks notice, but I also want to be courteous to my employer - without risking it going against me!! I am afraid I will get treated differently when my colleagues know I will be leaving (they have a lot of trouble retaining staff). When would you advise I let my boss know my plans? ( I am also due my appraisal in the next month). Will be very grateful for any advice!! Thank you :-)

Hi SillySausage,
You haven't said what area of Nursing you are in and sometimes that can be important. However it sounds like you care about giving them enough time to find someone to replace you. Does that mean that you would like to go back there if you had the opportunity? Also with your appraisal coming up are you feeling positive about your last year? Is there any training or experience that you are hoping to get in the time before you leave? If you are looking to get more experience or training and you want to come back then letting them know earlier would be wise. If you want more experience or training and you won't want to come back then might want to delay letting them know. If you give them the minimum amount of notice you won't have burnt any bridges in the event that your travel plans don't work out as expected up to the point of giving your notice.
