Hi
I am a newly qualified RMN.  Whilst the Mental Health side I am comfortable with, I am struggling with  the basic general nurse aspects on the ward, in particular things like ECG/EEG.  Can anyone recommend a basic book which gives me a grounding and does not assume too much knowledge?
Thanks

Hi Vespa Jim,

ECGs (Electrocardiograph - often written EKG to avoid confusing it with EEG) and EEGs (Electroencephalograph) are not considered to be normal basic general nursing skills. The development of these skills is usually limited to nurses working in Medical/Cardiology or Neurology units respectively. Perhaps you could expand a little on the type of ward /unit you are working on so that we could get a better understanding of what you might need to know.

Two books that might be useful to you:
"Nursing Transition: Transition to Professional Practice" Oxford University Press 9780199568437.
This book may allow you to get a better feel for what is expected of you as a newly qualified registered nurse in your field.

"Developing Practical Skills in Adult Nursing" Hodder and Arnold 9780340974209.
This book will perhaps give you an idea of the type of skills and knowledge expected 'basic' general nurses. It does have an an explanation of attaching a patient to a three lead ECG monitor and recognising a normal 'sinus' rhythm but that's usually the maximum that most general nurses would be expected to understand and do.
